Benni climbs up scoring charts
Posted on Monday, 29th October 2007
Bafana Bafana star striker netted his fifth English Premiership goal to steer Blackburn Rovers to a 2-1 victory over North London club Tottenham Hotspurs at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Robbie Keane had fired Spurs ahead with a 49th-minute penalty - his eighth goal of the season - but McCarthy struck 10 minutes later to put Rovers on level terms. Blackburn had goalkeeper Brad Friedel to thank for keeping them in the match. The former USA international goalkeeper made a string of fine saves, including a stop of Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov's goal-bound header that threatened to wrestle back the victory for the hosts. McCarthy's African compratriot, Congo-Brazzaville international defender Christopher Samba, headed a Tom Huddlestone free-kick clear to safety as the London club continued to chip away at Blackburn's creaking defence. On the other end of the field, Samba fired a remarkable late winner to clinch a hard-fought victory for Rovers and complete an impressive display by the Africans. Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena also took part in the match, when he replaced the injured Robbie Savage at half-time, after the tenacious Rovers midfielder limped off. McCarthy is now two goals behind former Jomo Cosmos striker Benjani Mwaruwari, who leads the English Premiership's goal-scoring charts. Mwaruwari - who plays for Portsmouth - has seven goals to his name, while Togo intenational Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal has six. Meanwhile, Steven Pienaar is slowly finding his feet at Everton, after the Bafana midfield maestro played his first full match. Everton won 2-0 with Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta scoring the first before Pienaar set up fellow African, Nigerian international Ayegbeni Yakubu, with a deft through-ball to score the winner in the 62nd minute.
