Date published: 05 April 2015 by Adrian Dicks
Ajax Cape Town beat Polokwane United 3 – 1 in a penalty shoot-out after they drew 1 -1 in a Plate Section Quarter Final fixture.
Ajax playing into the stiff breeze had Polokwane on the back foot for most of the first half. Polokwane managed some good runs down the right flank but were easily cut off by a solid Ajax defence. Polokwane's Kgotla Dikomang showed some good skill on the ball as he dribbled his way through the Ajax defence, only to tamely hit the ball straight at the Ajax goalkeeper.
Ajax looked on form as they dazzled with their trademark one-touch passing and brilliant off-the ball running. Polokwane, though, looked ordinary when it came to the final touch. Easy chances were missed, most from close range. Polokwane had a talented squad and solid game plan but were let down by wayward passing and numerous unforced errors.
Ajax looked at their most dangerous with the wind at their backs, but was still unable to get the ball in the back of the Polokwane net. Polokwane were pinned back in their own half for most of the 2nd period. The Polokwane defence however was not to be intimidated. They allowed the Ajax team very little time on the ball.
Ajax were left shell shocked after a brilliant display from Polokwane Kgaogelo Sekgota, who danced his way through the Ajax defence to calmly slot the ball past the bemused Ajax goalkeeper. Ajax got back in the game after being frustrated at every turn, Xhantilomzi Mesana blasting home from close range.
The match then proceeded to a penalty shoot-out.
